Medical Emergency Response Ireland (MER) welcomes the introduction of the Education (Medical Emergencies in Schools) Bill 2026, an important new proposal aimed at improving how schools prepare for and respond to medical emergencies.
The Bill seeks to increase participation by school staff in approved first aid training and support more schools in becoming authorised to hold and administer certain emergency medicines when needed.
As an organisation, we strongly support the intent of this Bill. Every child should be safe in school, and every school should have the training, confidence, and resources to respond when a medical emergency occurs. Whether the emergency involves anaphylaxis, asthma, cardiac arrest, seizures, diabetes, or another serious condition, timely action can make all the difference.
Through our recent engagement with schools across Ireland, we know many schools want to do more but need the legislative backing, guidance, and practical supports to do so safely and confidently. This Bill is a positive and practical step in the right direction.
We particularly welcome the focus on increasing staff training and expanding the number of schools authorised to access emergency medicines. These are sensible measures that have the potential to save lives, reduce avoidable distress, and create safer school environments for pupils, families, and staff.
MER will continue to post updates on this Bill and its progress on our website.
